Armor of God for Minecraft Lovers
...and for those who don't know anything about Minecraft
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had a hard time remembering what all the pieces of the armor of God are. I know they are important, and I know that mindfully putting them on regularly can help me win the daily battle against Satan...If only I could remember them!
Then recently, I started playing Minecraft, mostly because my husband and nieces and nephews like to play, and I wanted a way to connect with them. I started to learn about all the features of Minecraft and actually got caught up in the building and exploring. However, for those of you who know Minecraft, I was in peaceful mode, which means no hostile mobs to battle, and thus no need for armor. With encouragement from my nieces and nephews, I finally entered easy mode—and with it, I encountered hostile mobs (zombies and creepers and skeletons, oh my!). I quickly learned about armor, enchantments, and how to defend myself.
Then one day I was reading in Ephesians 6 where it talks about the armor of God, and the thought struck me that the pieces of armor listed in this passage are the primary pieces of armor used in Minecraft! A lightbulb went off. Finally, a mental picture that will help me remember the pieces of the armor of God!
After that lightbulb moment, I decided to write a Bible study about the armor of God, inspired by the parallels between the armor used in Minecraft and the armor listed in Ephesians 6. I invited my nieces and nephews to this weekly Bible study, and we have enjoyed it thoroughly! It’s a great time to connect with them, get them into God’s word, and hopefully build a mental picture in them that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Now, I invite you into our study.
For those of you who live with or know Minecraft lovers (especially kids), consider using this as a summer Bible study that you can do together. My nieces and nephews span the age range of 6–12, and they all enjoyed it (ideal age range is probably 8-15). I had the kids look up and read the Scripture passages, which helped them practice using their Bibles. Add in a little Minecraft time and a snack (and a Minecraft party/sleepover at the end), and it’s a study to remember for life!
Now, for those of you who don’t know anything about Minecraft, I haven’t forgotten about you. I plan to post a non-Minecraft version of each lesson in parallel. You will just need to click on the Non-Minecraft Version link in the email. This study can still be meaningful for you as we learn what the Bible has to say about each of the concepts represented in the armor. Or if you want to learn the basics of Minecraft so you can follow the Minecraft version, read my Overview of Minecraft for Beginners.
Each lesson will have leading questions and coordinating Scripture passages. I will also post a “key takeaway” for each question that you can use as a leader’s guide if you decide to do the study with a group.
