Bible Essentials Set 1: The Story of the Bible
Overview
Since I started writing Bible studies for Grounded in the Bible, I’ve become more aware of the need for Biblical teaching aimed at those who do not have much knowledge about the Bible. Whether it is new Christians, young people, people who are seeking truth, or even those who have been Christians for years, developing a foundational knowledge of the Bible is necessary for growing in a relationship with God. Yet many people know so little about what the Bible has to say to them.
Therefore, I am going to start a long-term series called Bible Essentials. In this series, I will select a passage of Scripture that provides foundational information about Biblical concepts or covers a classic Bible story. In each of these studies, I will ask and answer some simple questions while also providing context for the passage and fitting that passage into the greater story of the Bible.
The basic study questions are adapted from the Discovery Bible Study process, although it has been significantly adapted for our purposes.
What does the passage say about God?
What does the passage say about people?
What does the passage say about God’s plan?
I was introduced to this Bible study method by Mission Southside, a Christian nonprofit organization, and I’ve personally used it with the middle school youth group at my church. It has been a powerful tool for gaining Biblical knowledge and fostering spiritual discussion in these environments. I hope it will do the same for you.
The Bible Essentials studies are appropriate both for individual study and for group study. I will provide instructions throughout each study for both. Groups could include you and a spouse, family, friends, youth, new Christians, or even those who have deeper Biblical knowledge. The Bible always has something new and fresh to say to us if we take the time to read it.
This first set of studies will provide an overview of the story of the Bible. Then, over time, I will add passages to the series to fill in some of the other foundational and classic Bible passages.
