Throughout the Bible, music is used as a way to praise God. This is especially evident in the Psalms. Many Christian songs from today and the past are based directly on Scripture. The Songs of Scripture series will highlight songs that are based on a specific Scripture passage. Sometimes, it may be a line in a chorus or a verse that is taken directly from Scripture. Other times, most of the song could be based on Bible verses.
The great thing about music is that it sticks with you. Have you ever found yourself singing along to a song from your childhood, and you still know every word even though you haven’t heard it in years? When we sing songs based on Scripture, it is a great way to “hide God’s word in your heart” (Psalm 119:11). We can use those songs to praise God or to call out to him during a difficult time.
The Songs of Scripture series will provide the links between popular Christian songs, hymns, and choruses and the words of Scripture. Each post will include the song title, the writer/composer, a (partial) list of artists who have recorded the song, the verse(s) from Scripture that the song is based on, a link to the lyrics (if available), and a link to a video of the song (if available).
Posts in the Songs of Scripture series will be sent out randomly as I come across songs that fit the series. They will be in addition to the normal weekly Bible study. If you have a song you would like to suggest for the series, feel free to comment here or on one of the song posts with the name of the song, associated Bible verse, and perhaps a link to a video. I’d love to have your input!
You can look forward to the first post in the Songs of Scripture series next week!
