I am an over-analyzer. And you know what comes with over-analyzing? Worry. Feeling burdened and overwhelmed. But I know that’s not what God has in mind for me. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” The “good word” that God has placed on my heart lately is “Surrender.” Surrender my will to His will. Surrender my worries to Him. Surrender my burdens to Him. Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” God wants to take the things I am burdened with and take care of them for me. For someone who constantly feels burdened, rest sounds like a welcome relief.
What are you burdened with today? What do you need to surrender to God? Are you worried about that test that you studied hard for but aren’t sure you’ll pass? Or about getting to the end of your seemingly unending to do list? What about that unexpected repair bill that you aren’t sure how you will pay? Or that disheartening medical diagnosis you just received? What about that bad habit that you just can’t seem to break? Or the expectations you feel you’ll never live up to? What about that sin in your life that just keeps overtaking you? Or those secrets buried deep inside that no one else sees? Burdens come in all shapes and sizes, and everyone struggles with something different. But you know what’s amazing about God? He can handle them all. When we try to conquer all of those things on our own, we end up weighed down. But when we surrender them to God, suddenly our burdens feel lighter and we can finally rest.
All of that sounds great, but the reality is that we are human. Somehow we always seem to pick those burdens back up. But you know what else is amazing about God? He gives second chances. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” God is faithful to be there for us when we mess up. Every day, every moment, is a new opportunity to surrender. Surrender your will to God’s will. Surrender your burdens to Him. All day. Every day. And He promises to be faithful to give us mercy and give us rest.
